
Ball python temperature is the single most common thing keepers get wrong, and it’s behind a large share of the problems that get blamed on something else. A snake that won’t eat, regurgitates, sheds badly, or sits in the cool hide permanently usually has a heat problem rather than a mysterious one.
The numbers themselves are simple. Warm side surface 88 to 92F, cool side 78 to 80F, ambient in between. What trips people up is measuring the wrong thing with the wrong tool, and running heat without a thermostat.

Why the Warm Side Matters So Much
Ball pythons digest with heat. A snake that eats and then can’t reach 88 to 92F doesn’t digest properly, and in bad cases it regurgitates the meal several days later. Regurgitation is hard on a snake and it takes weeks to recover from.
The warm side is also where a snake goes when it’s fighting off illness, processing a shed, or simply thermoregulating through its day. Take it away and everything downstream suffers quietly.

Measuring Ball Python Temperature Properly
Two rules, and they solve most problems.
Measure the surface, not the air. A ball python lies on the floor of its enclosure with its belly in contact with the substrate. That surface can run 10 or 15 degrees hotter than the air just above it, particularly over an under-tank heater. Air readings tell you almost nothing about what your snake is actually experiencing.
Use an infrared temp gun, not a stick-on dial. The adhesive dial thermometers bundled with starter kits routinely read 5 to 10 degrees off, and they measure air anyway. A temp gun costs very little and it’s the most useful tool you’ll own for reptile keeping.
Point it at the substrate surface on the warm side, inside the warm hide, at the cool end, and inside the cool hide. Four readings, ten seconds, and you know your whole gradient.
Digital probe thermometers are the other good option, with the probe placed at floor level on the warm side. Just don’t rely on where the suction cup happens to stick.
The Thermostat Is Not Optional
An unregulated heat mat or heat tape can reach temperatures well above 100F. Ball pythons do not reliably move away from heat that’s damaging them, and thermal burns on the belly are a common and genuinely awful injury.
Every heat source needs a thermostat. On-off models work for heat mats. Dimming or pulse proportional models are better for overhead bulbs and ceramic emitters, since they hold a steadier temperature.
Place the probe where it actually reads the surface your snake contacts, usually taped to the glass directly above the heat mat on the inside, or resting at floor level under the substrate layer. A probe dangling in the air regulates air temperature and lets the floor run far too hot.

Heat Sources That Work
Under-tank heaters and heat tape are the traditional choice and they work well for belly heat. Cover no more than a third to a half of the floor so the snake can move off it.
Overhead halogen or ceramic heat emitters create better ambient warmth and more closely mimic natural radiant heat. Ceramic emitters produce no light, which suits a nocturnal species.
Radiant heat panels mounted on the enclosure ceiling are excellent and increasingly popular, especially in PVC enclosures.
Deep heat projectors produce infrared heat without visible light and work well as a night source.
What to avoid entirely: heat rocks, which cause burns, and colored night bulbs, which disturb sleep cycles and provide poor heat.

Night Temperatures
Don’t drop below 75F. Ball pythons come from West and Central Africa where nights stay warm, and sustained cool nights lead to respiratory infections.
You don’t need a night drop at all. Some keepers allow a few degrees, which is fine, but there’s no requirement for it and no benefit worth risking a cold snake over.
If your room gets genuinely cold overnight, use a ceramic heat emitter or deep heat projector on a thermostat. Both produce heat with no light, which matters for a nocturnal animal.
How Temperature and Humidity Interact
This is where a lot of ball python setups go wrong in both directions at once.
Heat dries air. Turn up a basking lamp to fix a cool enclosure and you’ll drop humidity, which causes stuck shed. Compensate by soaking the substrate and you create the conditions for scale rot, which is a bacterial skin infection caused by prolonged contact with wet bedding, covered in our ball python scale rot guide.
The way out is to fix them separately. Get temperature right with a thermostat-controlled heat source. Get humidity right with substrate choice, a partially covered top, and a properly sized water dish, not by drenching the bedding. Target 55 to 65 percent normally, raised toward 70 during a shed cycle. Higher than that sustained is where skin problems start.

Signs Your Temperatures Are Wrong
Too cold: refusing food, regurgitating days after a meal, staying on the warm side constantly, sluggishness, and respiratory signs like wheezing or bubbling at the nostrils.
Too hot: hiding on the cool end permanently, restlessness and pacing, soaking in the water bowl for long stretches, and open-mouth breathing.
Water bowl soaking deserves a note, since it has three possible causes. Overheating, low humidity, or mites. Check temperature and humidity first, then inspect for tiny black dots around the eyes and under the chin.

Track It Rather Than Trusting It
Temperature problems are usually seasonal drift. Nothing in your setup changes, but the room does, and a warm side that read 90F in March is running 85F by November or 95F in July.
Checking weekly and writing the number down catches that before your snake tells you.
